Trim Levels (Exterior)

Regardless of whether you're looking at 2017 or a 2019, the Nissan Frontier comes in five different trim levels: S, SV, Desert Runner, Pro-4X, and SL. Aside from being available in different trims, you can also choose between two body styles — an extended cab or a four-door crew cab — and two bed lengths — 6.1-feet or 5-feet — at certain trim levels. The base trim comes exclusively in an extended cab and has 15-inch steel wheels. When you upgrade to the SV, you get your choice of cab style, 16-inch alloy wheels, power door locks and windows, a sliding rear window, and a sunroof on crew cab models.
The Desert Runner is off-road oriented, giving you off-road tires and fog lights, while the Pro-4X ups the ante with adjustable cargo tie-downs and a spray-in bedliner. The top-tier SL is available exclusively as a crew cab and comes standard with a sunroof, a roof rack with crossbars, side steps for easy cab access, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Engine (Power)

When you opt for the entry-level S trim from 2017-2019, you get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission, though you can opt for an automatic transmission if you'd prefer. This engine produces 152 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque and has a fuel economy of 19 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. If you decide to go with a crew cab model of the Nissan Frontier, you're going to get a 4-liter V-6 engine, which produces 261 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque. Though it varies with the type of transmission you opt for, the V-6 gets around 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.

Performance

The S trim comes standard with two-wheel drive, but four-wheel drive is available on most other trims. There are some exceptions, like the Desert Runner that comes only with rear-wheel drive and high-performance shock absorbers for off-road adventures. The Pro-4X, which is available exclusively with four-wheel drive, features skid plates, a locking rear differential, and specially tuned shocks.

Interior

In 2018, Bluetooth was made standard, and a 7-inch touchscreen was added to the S in 2019. Aside from those upgrades, the base trim level comes standard with interior amenities like an auxiliary audio jack, USB input, a four- or six-speaker sound system with a CD player, steering wheel audio controls, air conditioning, cloth-covered front bucket seats, and a rear privacy glass. When you upgrade to the SV, you get satellite radio. The Pro-4X features dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a 5.8-inch touchscreen display with navigation. At the top level, the SL comes with a rear-seat center armrest, power-adjustable front seats, and leather upholstery.

Safety Features

The Nissan Frontier S comes with a rearview camera, which was added as a standard feature in 2018, cruise control, and Siri Eyes Free voice command. The SV includes these features as well as rear parking sensors. When you opt for the Pro-4X, you get an auto-dimming rearview mirror. With the SL, you get heated mirrors to ensure a clear view in any weather.
