As a parent, you want to ensure your teen driver has a reliable vehicle to drive, and the decision needs to be made as to whether it should be new or used. While a new car may sound exciting to your teen, here are five reasons your teen should choose a used car.

1. Save Money

A new car costs more because the latest and greatest come with a higher price tag. It’s also unlikely that your teen has saved enough money to purchase a new vehicle outright, which also means taking on a loan. Even if you do have the money put away for a new vehicle, you’ll save a lot by purchasing a car that’s a couple of years old. Car value depreciates quickly, and you may save thousands by buying a slightly-used car over a new vehicle.

2. Insurance Savings

When you purchase a new vehicle, you also need to have full coverage insurance in order to protect the investment, which means a higher insurance payment. Consider purchasing a used car to save everyone some cash. When looking at used cars, you may even be able to find a decent vehicle for a few thousand dollars, allowing you to purchase it with cash on hand and save money by only carrying liability.

3. Better Selection

Typically, if you’re looking for a particular make and model, you’re more likely to have a wider variety to choose from on the used car lot versus new. Your selection could include models spanning several years, providing you with the bells and whistles you desire via more options. You won’t always find exactly the make and model you’re looking for when limiting yourself to new inventory only. Dealerships tend to carry a more limited new inventory, especially when it comes to the same vehicle models.

4. Amateur Drivers

Let’s face it, your teen driver is still learning to drive and with that will come potential mistakes. They may scrape the fender while pulling into the garage or back into a tree when leaving a friend’s house. There’s also a higher level of normal wear and tear that an amateur driver puts on a vehicle. It would be beneficial to everyone to allow your teen to work out the kinks associated with becoming a better driver on a used car. This will save the dents and scratches on a new vehicle and allow your driver to upgrade once they are a more seasoned driver.

5. Rare Vehicles

Several manufacturers have discontinued models that your teen driver may love to drive. There’s a possibility of finding these types of rare vehicles on a used car lot, even if they are no longer available as a new option. Vehicles are discontinued due to model updates or low sales as manufacturers try to fit their options to what the current market desires. These rare finds are often priced to sell, benefiting your pocketbook as well.
