Tyler Rose Garden

Tyler is known as the “Rose Capital of the World”, and when you visit this incredible garden you’ll understand how we earned the nickname. More than 32,000 rose bushes and 600 cultivars can be found here. The gardens were built as a Works Project Administration (WPA) project and were completed in 1952. The project also included the building of a stone picnic pavilion, balconies, stairs, and other garden features.

The garden encompasses 14 acres and includes numerous other flowers and plants, including a shade garden with Japanese maple trees. Water features, ponds, and fountains have been added to enhance the garden’s beauty even further. There is even a small museum that covers the history of the garden and its place in Tyler’s history. The garden is located at 420 Rose Park Drive.

Tyler State Park

This 986-acre park features a 64-acre man-made lake, 100-foot trees, and historic structures from the creation of the park in the 1930s. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) spent six years on the construction of the park, and they built roads, dams, a concession building, a dance pavilion, and other features. Many of the structures built by the CCC are still in use today.

Thirteen miles of trails cross the park through the Pineywoods and are great for hiking or strolling and enjoying the natural beauty. Fishing is also available from three piers and a boat ramp, and the lake contains crappie, bass, catfish, and perch. Boat rentals are available from the Texas State Park Store.

Azalea Residential Historic District

This district contains the largest collection of early to mid-20th-century residences in the city. Eclectic architectural styles abound, and the area has been divided into 36 subsections to showcase the varied styles. As the district grew, churches and schools were added and brick streets were constructed. The entire district is dominated by azaleas which are planted everywhere. The Azalea Festival is held in this district each spring.

Children’s Park

This peaceful and beautiful park was built as a dedication to all children. The park is not large, it is approximately 1 block by 1 block in size, but it is packed with exciting activities for children. Life-sized bronze statues of children at play are located around the park, together with life-sized statues of bears, and a children’s story circle. Two beautiful mini waterfalls flow into a fish pond, near a butterfly garden. For the young, and young at heart, this park is a definite must-visit.
